Grants: What We Do
Awarding grants for the betterment of the Long Beach community is an important aspect of the work of LBCF. Grant awards may come from the Foundation or through donor-advised funds. Grant recipients must be valid 501(c)(3) organizations, and we perform due diligence to verify good standing prior to awarding the grants.
Our primary granting process is accomplished through strategic grant-making. Each year, the Board chooses an issue on which to focus based on the current needs of the community. Organizations and/or service providers who are able to address this issue are identified and approached to outline the program/service that might best address the issues. Often new programs are designed and implemented as a result of the grant received.
The opportunity to apply for grants is offered in our role as the local granting agent for the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation, which continues to invest in the 26 communities where the Knight-Ridder company owned papers. Their focus in these communities is on transformation, which they believe comes from big ideas that can make a lasting change in our communities.
Knight Foundation's Community Benefit Fund for Long Beach is administered by LBCF, and Letters of Inquiry are accepted requesting grant awards from this fund. Letters of Inquiry should follow these guidelines.
