January 7, 2010 - The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced today that it intends to invest $70 million over the next seven years in community foundations serving cities and towns where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. The new Community Foundation Initiative will deepen Knight Foundation's focus on fostering informed, engaged communities. Visit this link for the full story http://www.kflinks.com/informed-engaged or click here to view the press release.  Long Beach is among Knight's 26 communities. More details will follow on how this new initiative will benefit our local community.

Long Beach choreographer, Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, was named one of two USA Knight Fellows on Monday, December 14. The result of a $1 million grant to United States Artists, these are the first of 18 USA Knight Fellowships to be awarded over the next 5 years. For more details, click here for the press release

Almost $95,000.00 was contributed in the 2009 Press-Telegram Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign! Over half this amount came from individual community donors. Thank you for your generosity! The Employee Community Fund of Boeing ($5,000), Johnny Rebs' Shell-Out-For-Charity ($6,279.76) and Kiwanis Club of Long Beach ($30,000) also boosted the fund with their grants. Each of the five youth agencies with summer camp programs - YMCA of Greater Long Beach, Camp Fire USA, Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts - received grants of $17,000 to sponsor week-long summer camp experiences for underprivileged Long Beach youth. The remaining funds went to the endowment fund established to provide support for this program into the future.

The 2009 Press-Telegram Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign is launched with a
column by Tom Hennessy on Sunday, April 26. Since 1999 more than $754,000 has been raised for the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA, and Boys & Girls Clubs to send children to camp. The average cost of a week at summer camp is $350.
