May 26, 2010 - Seven Long Beach men are swimming 28.3 miles from Catalina Island to Long Beach on July 31 to raise money for charity. Dubbed The Dawn Patrol, this group hopes to raise $40,000 to benefit four local charities. Read more about this adventure at The Swim 2010. May 26, 2010 - The Press-Telegram Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign is in full swing. As of May 23, 322 donors have contributed $40,756.80 to fund scholarships for children to attend a week-long summer camp. The "Big Five" youth agencies in Long Beach - YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Camp Fire USA - run these camps where children enjoy an experience that has often proved to be life-changing. March 29, 2010 - LBCF was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to provide Emergency Grants for Healthcare Services to local healthcare providers to help manage and meet the needs of rising patient caseloads during these challenging economic times. Eligible nonprofit healthcare providers can receive up to $10,000 for core operating support. Organizations must be located along the Atlantic Avenue Corridor - the area defined by the Connected Corridor project. Click here to view the full press release.

January 7, 2010 - The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced today that it intends to invest $70 million over the next seven years in community foundations serving cities and towns where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. The new Community Foundation Initiative will deepen Knight Foundation's focus on fostering informed, engaged communities. Long Beach choreographer, Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, was named one of two USA Knight Fellows on Monday, December 14. The result of a $1 million grant to United States Artists, these are the first of 18 USA Knight Fellowships to be awarded over the next 5 years. For more details, click here for the press release
